Grants offered for various programs to increase participation across the country
Organization tops $2 million in total grant support
US Youth Soccer Grants Program descriptions and applications
The 2010 US Youth Soccer grant applications are now available on USYouthSoccer.org. For 2010, US Youth Soccer has added a recreation grants program in addition to the TOPSoccer and Soccer Across America grants. The deadline for all grants has been set for Jan. 8, 2010. Last year, as a part of the 12th annual grant cycle and in partnership with adidas, US Youth Soccer awarded $85,000 in grants. Grants were first made available in 1998 with more than $2 million given to date. US Youth Soccer has issued 444 awards to groups of various sizes across the United States. These grants continue to assist in developing soccer programs and furthering The Game for ALL Kids!®. Starting in 2010, US Youth Soccer will allocate more resources by adding the US Youth Soccer Recreation Grant Program. US Youth Soccer established this grants program to help recreation programs of US Youth Soccer State Associations and other organization members, in existence at least three years that are in need of assistance to maintain and grow their recreation programs. US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, who has a mental or physical disability.
Soccer Across America is designed to introduce the sport of soccer to youngsters living in communities not yet served by existing clubs and leagues. Soccer Across America provides soccer training and administrative guidance to players and organizations who might otherwise not be exposed to the sport. Soccer Across America also helps new programs find the funding and equipment to begin and then to expand their activities. In the past several years, US Youth Soccer has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial and material support to programs across the United States. "We believe these US Youth Soccer programs further our mission of fostering the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America's youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition," said Jim Cosgrove, executive director of US Youth Soccer. "With the addition of the recreation grants program, we continue looking forward to increasing the opportunities provided to children across the country."

CYSA SETS UNDER-10 CUP FESTIVAL FOR DECEMBER 2009 |
|
The CYSA Board of Directors and Cup Committees are delighted to announce that all Under 10 Cup play has been approved to take place at our inaugural Under-10 CYSA Cup Festival. In an effort to introduce our young members to their first CYSA Cup experience, we have decided to schedule all three levels of Under-10 Cup play in one location over two thrill-packed weekends in December. This not only allows the Under 10 families who planned to participate in CYSA Cup to wrap up their seasons earlier than originally planned, but it provides us with the opportunity to focus exclusively on the Under-10 age groups by scheduling all Under-10 Cup matches at a centralized venue in Livermore, California. Representatives from each of the three Cup Committees will be on hand to conduct the competitions and to ensure the event runs smoothly from start to finish. The weekend of December 5th - 6th is set for preliminary-round matches where teams will play each of the other teams in their bracket (typically teams are placed in 4-team brackets). Based on the results of those matches, the teams with the highest number of points in each bracket will advance to the single elimination round competition on December 12th - 13th. In keeping their pledge to provide a full-service association that offers a broad array of programs to meet the needs of every player, CYSA's three Cups have a distinct level of competition for every division of play that will accommodate the full spectrum of talent levels. All games will be played in a 8-v-8 format. We encourage your team to see what CYSA is all about. Join us for this exciting and fun-filled event that will showcase "the game for ALL kids" where we put the Kids First!

The CAL/EPA Evaluating Artificial Turf |
The California Environmental Protection Agency (CAL/EPA) is evaluating the new generation of artificial turf playing fields. Past studies suggest these fields are safe. Cal/EPA's evaluation will add to the body of health information on these playing fields.
To accomplish this we need to estimate how many hours athletes spend playing organized sports each year. For hours spent playing soccer, we believe soccer coaches can provide the most accurate estimates. Please consider using the link below to take our very short survey. This survey asks coaches to estimate the time soccer players spend at organized practices and organized games each year (in an organized soccer league: youth, school or adult).
The results of this survey will be published in our final report, scheduled for completion in the spring of 2010. Thank you very much for taking the time to help make our study possible. Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions.

New Standard for Soccer Goals Helps Prevent Tip-Over Deaths Linked to Unanchored GoalsWASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the soccer goal industry helped develop a new safety standard that will reduce the risk of soccer goal tip-over. Since 1979, CPSC has learned of 23 deaths and 38 serious injuries from soccer goals tipping over and crushing children who climb on them or hang from the crossbar.
CPSC Chairman Ann Brown said, "We want kids to have fun, be active, and play soccer with goals that are safely anchored into the ground. The new standard makes soccer goals stable and, therefore, less likely to tip over on children."
The "Provisional Safety Standard and Performance Specification for Soccer Goals" (ASTM-PS-75-99) was approved March 2, 1999. The standard requires that movable soccer goals, except very light-weight goals, not tip over when the goal is weighted in a downward or horizontal direction. The standard also specifies warning labels that must be attached to the goal, such as: "Warning: Always anchor goal. Unsecured goal can fall over causing serious injury or death."
Most of the deaths and injuries occurred with unanchored homemade goals including those assembled by high school shop classes and community businesses. People were killed when they climbed on the soccer goal or while attempting to do chin-ups, pulling the goal down. All goals, whether homemade or manufactured, should be properly secured to the ground to avoid injuries or deaths associated with tip-over.
There are several different ways to properly anchor soccer goals. The number and type of anchors used will depend on factors such as soil type and goal weight. Anchor types include:
- Auger-style anchors that are screwed into the ground.
- Semipermanent anchors, which require a permanently secured base that is buried underground combined with the use of tethers or bolts to secure the goal.
- Peg, stake or j-hook style anchors that are driven into the ground.
- Sandbags or counterweights for indoor facilities.
